Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The most efficient and safest way to order your medication is online via the NHS app. You can download the NHS app free via your app store. Once you are registered you just need to click on ‘Request repeat prescriptions’ and your repeat medication will be available to order. If you have any problems with this, give our reception a call and we will try to help.

You can also order medication using the tear-off repeat slip on your last prescription then posting it in to the prescriptions box in reception. We can not take prescription requests over the phone.

Please allow two full working days for prescriptions to be processed and remember to take weekends and bank holidays into account.

Remember that sometimes your doctor may request that you are seen before receiving a further prescription. This is because they need to check that your ongoing medication is working adequately and not causing you any problems.

Electronic repeat dispensing – eRD

If you are already receiving, or have agreed to receive, electronic prescriptions and you get regular or repeat medicines that do not change, you may be suitable for electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD).

Repeat dispensing allows your GP to send a series of repeat prescriptions to your pharmacy in one go, so there’s no need for you to order them each time. It’s reliable, secure and confidential. Your regular prescriptions are stored securely on the NHS database, so they’ll be ready at the pharmacy each time you need them.  This means you won’t have to re-order or collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP practice every time you need more medicine.

If you feel you would benefit from this and fit the eligibility criteria, please arrange an appointment with our practice pharmacist.

Pharmacy first service.

This is a new service that allows pharmacists to supply prescription- only medicines and antivirals where clinically appropriate, to treat seven common health conditions as follows:

  • Sinusitis – 12 years and over
  • Sore throat – 5 years and over
  • Earache – 1 – 17 years
  • infected insect bite – 1 year and over
  • impetigo – 1 year and over
  • shingles – 18 years and over
  • uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women – 16 – 64 years

If you contact the practice with any of the above conditions our Care Navigators in most cases can make you a direct referral to a pharmacy of your choice which takes them seconds to complete.
Once the referral has been made to the pharmacy you will be provided with the contact number of your chosen pharmacy who you then can call to book a consultation.
In some cases, the pharmacist will complete the consultation over the telephone, if this is not the case, then a face-to-face consultation will be booked on the same day.

If you are exempt from prescription charges, you will not pay for treatment for these conditions if diagnosed.

Our Care Navigators can also refer you to the Pharmacy First Service for a blood pressure check. Once referred, the pharmacy will contact you with a convenient appointment.

Using this service will help free up appointments for those patients who need to be seen by a GP or nurse.

Pharmacists can also advise on how to treat the following:

  • skin conditions, such as mild acne and mild eczema
  • coughs and colds, including nasal congestion and sore throat
  • minor cuts and bruises
  • constipation and haemorrhoids (piles)
  • hay fever and allergies
  • aches and pains, such as headaches, earache and back pain
  • indigestion, diarrhoea and threadworms
  • period pain and thrush
  • warts and verrucas, mouth ulcers and cold sores
  • athlete’s foot
  • nappy rash and teething

If your problem is more serious and needs the attention of a GP, your pharmacist will recognise this and advise you to see your GP instead.
